'Lingaa' Movie Review from Melbourne - Hari Yellina

"Lingaa," which hit screens on the birthday of Thalaivar Rajinikanth, has received positive reviews from critics.

The KS Ravi Kumar directorial has Rajini playing a dual role. Anushka Shetty, Sonakshi Sinha, Santhanam, Karunakaran, Dev Gill, Jagapathi Babu and veteran director-actor K. Vishwananth are also part of the cast.

This is the third time that Rajini and KS Ravi Kumar have teamed up for a film after delivering two blockbusters "Muthu" and "Padayappa." "Lingaa" is carrying huge expectations and it will be interesting to see if the film will be able to impress the audience.
Plot: Raja Lingeshwaran (Rajinikanth), a wealthy man, completes his engineering at Cambridge and comes to Solaiyur village during the British era. The village is hit by severe drought every year. On seeing the plight of the farmers, Lingeshwaran appeals to the British government to construct a dam in the village. Following the British government's refusal, Lingeshwaran decides to construct the dam with the help of the villagers. Unfortunately, when the dam is nearing completion, Lingeshwaran is forced to leave the village.

In the present era, an engineer comes to survey the dam in the villagein the presence of the village headman (Karunakaran) and MP (Jagapathi Babu). Unfortunately the engineer dies on the same night,  but before passing away he asks the villagers to open the Shiva temple, which has been closed for several years.
The village headman reveals that the temple should be opened only by Lingeshwaran's grandson. The villagers go on a search of thegrandson to bring him back to Solaiyur.Lingaa (Rajinikanth), the grandson of Lingeshwaran, is a petty thief who goes around stealing small objects with his sidekicks Santhanam and Karunakaran.

Lakshmi (Anushka) brings him to the Solaiyur village. Lingaa finds out that the idol inside the Shiva temple is made of precious stones and decides to steal it. He eventually learns about his grandfather's past and the plight of the farmers. What happens next forms the crux of the story.
Critics have stated that the first half of the film is entertaining while the second half drags. Rajinikanth's performance is the major highlight ofthe film, while the other actors play their parts well. Rathnavelu's cinematography is one of the plus points of "Lingaa," stated the critics. The film's run time, placement of songs and the climax stunts are some of the minus points of the film.
Check below the review roundup of "Lingaa"
"Director KS Ravikumar has given us many super hits with the Superstar in the past and is all set to give another one with Lingaa. Known as the king of commercial entertainers, he has lived up to the name in his latest directorial too," according to Galatta.
"The story is larger than life, just what the Superstar's fans would want to see him in on the big screens, after a big gap! The director has seamlessly woven the past and the present in this movie set in two different eras. The dialogues need a very special mention with Superstar getting to deliver some new punch dialogues," the website stated.
"Credits goes to KS Ravikumar for tapping Rajini's strengths and downplaying his age-related constraints. KS Ravikumar has scripted based on a contemporary issue related to Mullai Periyar dam and weaved if effectively in a fictitious story spanning across generations," stated movie crow website.
"A round of applause for DoP Rathnavelu too, for the way he has captured the scenic landscape and offered a treat to the eyes with the high top angle shots. Senior Rajini's little romance track with Sonakshi Sinha is another highlight and the Bollywood beauty fits the bill perfectly with her native looks, cute expressions and remarks. Chinmayee's dubbing for her makes us invest in her role even more," according to Behindwoods Review Board.
"Lingaa" has pleasing moments to satisfy the Rajinikanth fan in you but the cineaste in you is not properly taken care of. Unlike KS Ravikumar – Rajinikanth's previous outings, Lingaa has an unexciting storyline with less elements of thriller, but it does offer an entertaining movie-watching experience in a small-scale," stated Surendhar MK of OnlyKollywood.
Verdict: Rajinikanth show all the way

Yevadu Review by Hari Yellina

Behind Yevadu :

Starring Ramcharan and Shruthi Hassan, and Allu Arjun,Kajal in cameo roles, with succesful Producer ‘Dil Raju’ producing the movie,Vamsi Paidipally directing it with awesome music director DSP ‘Yevadu’ probably is the most awaited movie for last few months.Audio of the movie has been done on July 1st,2013. The movie is expected to hit screen in the month of august. But after several postponements finally ‘Yevadu’ has joined the Pongal Race.So let us know how the movie was..!!

Story :

Satya (Allu Arjun) and Kajal (Deepthi) are lovers.Dheeru Bhai (Rahul Dev) has interest in Kajal. As Kajal hates violence they run away to get married. But Villians kill Kajal parents and attack Satya(Bunny). They kill Kajal and beat up Satya (Bunny) and fire the bus in which he is there.Allu Arjun survives but his faces gets seriously burnt. Then Jayasudha (Doctor) executes Plastic Surgery in which the vocals also change. Allu Arjun gets the avatar of ‘Ramcharan’ with this. Now he sets on a Mission to kill the people responsible for Kajal’s death. One by one he takes revenge on all the 3 persons responsible for that.He takes the help of Amy Jackson in doing so.But what happens next?? What is the role Shruthi Hassan?? What is Sai Kumar’s Role? All these twists form the main part of the story.

Performances :

Allu Arjun and Kajal have a limited part to play. They were perfect for the role assigned. RamCharan gave a good performance especially in the action sequences and songs. Shruthi Hassan role is a pretty short one. He looks gorgeous in the 2 songs given to her. Jayasudha and Saikumar’s performances need a special mention. Dialogues uttered by them came out excellently and gave the needed enthusiasm to the movie. Kota Srinivas rao’s role is fine with humour touch.Brahmanandam’s comedy track is not as expected. It could produce only few laughters at times.

Technical Performances :

Starting off with the music. DSP gave some good tunes to the movie. Freedom and Nee Jathaga songs are weak, received by the people. Back Ground Music by DSP is superb in the movie. In Fact, BGM gave life to most of the action sequences and important scenes in the movie. Cinematography is good. Story by Vakkantham Vamsi is quite different. Revenge drama in a different genre.Dialogues penned by Abburi ravi were good. Many dialogues got tremendous response.Stunts were perfect. All the murder sequences were well shot.Director Vamsi Paidipally was clear with his script and narrated it perfectly.

Positives :

  • Action Episodes
  • Twists
  • Interval Bang
  • BackGround Music
  • Saikumar Scenes

Negatives :

  • Comedy couldn’t produce laughters
  • A dragged 2nd Half.
  • Weak Climax.

Analysis :

Surely,Yevadu is a commercial movie blended with an interesting twist. But,with Brahmanandam and others involved in it some good comedy is expected from the movie. But the comedy is not upto the mark. Excluding some main twists yevadu is a routine revenge drama. For now, with ’1′ getting a negative talk , Yevadu might be received well especially by commercial /mass movie lovers. It might perform well at the Box-Office too. Talk from the Benefit and Premier shows is good. The makers have reduced the costs of premiers in Overseas .All these factors can help Yevadu to earn to profits with Pongal Holidays on..!!

Verdict : A time-pass movie for this Sankranthi. Don’t look for any Special or Wow factor in it.Go without any expectations. You will get surprised with the twists and enjoy the movie.Feast for fans with excellent action episodes.!!

So, this sankranthi ‘Yevadu’ can get a one time watch like his previous movies Racha and Naayak..!!

Rating : 3.10/5

Yaariyan Review - Hari Yellina

Divya Khosla Kumar is no stranger to the entertainment industry. Besides directing several videos, she has also acted in a big-budget film starring A-list actors [AB TUMHARE HAWALE WATAN SATHIYO]. So when Divya -- the wife of the head honcho of T-Series [Bhushan Kumar] -- decided to make a feature-film, everyone expected her to start with top of the line stars/creme-de-la-creme in her maiden venture. Instead, she chose to cast rank newcomers in principal roles -- a move that raised eyebrows.

Post the super-success of STUDENT OF THE YEAR, helmed by Karan Johar and AASHIQUI-2, helmed by Mohit Suri, which was a game changer, several studios as well as reputed raconteurs are executing qualitative projects with fresh faces. YAARIYAN, which marks the directorial debut of Divya Khosla Kumar, stands out from films of its ilk. Reason: While the principal cast boasts of freshers, the making, opulence and splendor is at par with any mega-budget film attempted in Bollywood. The question that crosses your mind is, is YAARIYAN equally big in terms of content? Let's evaluate...

First, the plot! The film starts with the college principal [Gulshan Grover] summoning five students, handing them the responsibility of saving the college campus from a foreign hotelier who intends making a resort. The deal is that in order to save the college, the Indian students should outdo their Australian counterparts in the test of physical and mental abilities. While there are the expected ups, downs and betrayals, what triumphs in the end is friendship, as the title suggests.

I genuinely believe that the teenage years are the best phase of your life. When one is well ensconced in the dreamy world. When life is yet to throw challenges towards you... Divya Khosla Kumar attempts to encapsulate that period through the lead characters of her movie. In fact, it won't be erroneous to state that YAARIYAN attempts to pay tribute to that phase of an individual's life.

Evidently, Divya Khosla Kumar seems to be an ardent fan of movies such as JO JEETA WOHI SIKANDAR, KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI, JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA, 3 IDIOTS and STUDENT OF THE YEAR, since there are faint echoes of such acclaimed films in her maiden endeavor. Of course, the premise of YAARIYAN is dissimilar and so are the character sketches.

The first half of YAARIYAN has its moments of fun, although the narrative tends to go astray at times. If one were to pinpoint the deficiencies, the romance between the professors appears forced in the narrative. Also, Himansh's cousin being attacked by members of the Australian team lacks conviction. The humor/liveliness also dries up after a point and one feels that the first half -- which commenced with lively and funny moments -- could've been succinct by at least 10/15 minutes.

However, the writing gets consistent in the post-interval portions. The mountain biking race as also the rock climbing contest is the mainstay of the film. They are brilliantly executed! Prior to that, the tender moments shared by the lead pair works decently well too. Divya also gets the intensity in the emotional sequences spot on. Additionally, the dazzling locales and magnificent cinematography translate into a truly good looking film.

Divya deserves kudos for accepting the challenge of directing freshers in her debut film. The best of storytellers are not afraid of taking risks and Divya seems to be one of those. Her handling of the humorous moments as well as the emotional ones with maturity confirms the fact that she knows the craft well. But one does feel that the writing could've been sharp edged at places. One of the USPs of the film is -- no prizes for guessing this one! -- the musical score, which has the word 'Chartbuster' written all over it. In fact, every track has caught on big time with listeners, especially 'Baarish' [soulful], 'Sunny Sunny' [a rage with partygoers], 'ABCD' [foot-tapping], 'Allah Waariyan' [melodic] and 'Meri Maa' [makes you moist-eyed]. Cinematography is top notch, with the DoP [Sameer Arya] capturing the spectacular locales with flourish. The opening and end credits are also innovative and catch your eye!

Now to the performances! Agree, the beginners don't set the screen ablaze at the very start itself, but the performances grow on you gradually. Himansh Kohli is earnest and endearing. He has the makings of a fine actor. Rakul Preet looks beautiful and acts confidently. The way she emotes with her eyes is commendable. Nicole Faria, Dev Sharma, Shreyas Pardiwalla, Serah Singh and Vikas Verma are appropriate in their respective parts. Evelyn Sharma looks gorgeous and does a fine job.

Gulshan Grover is wonderfully restrained. Deepti Naval and Smita Jaykar are perfect.

On the whole, YAARIYAN has a gripping second half, smash hit musical score and the youthful romance that should lure and entice its target audience -- the youth. A treat for youngsters and young at heart!

1 - Nenokkadine Review by Hari Yellina

Film: 1 - Nenokkadine
Rating: 2.5/5

Banners:
 EROS International, 14 Reels Entertainment

Cast: Mahesh Babu, Kriti Sanon, Kelly Dorjee, Nasser, Posani, Sayaji Shinde, Pradeep Rawat, Srinivas Reddy, Gautham Krishna and others
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
Cinematographer: Ratnavelu
Editor: Karthika Srinivas
Director: Sukumar
Producers: Achanta Ram, Achanta Gopichand, Anil Sunkara

Release date: 10/01/2014

Prince Mahesh Babu is back after spending a lot of his time and dates on this project. It is also the first time director Sukumar has attempted something different. Is it that different? Let us see

Whats the story?

Mahesh Babu is a rock star with fans worldwide. But he does not remember anything. He forgets things immediately. He feels like he did something but he does not do anything. He thinks he did not do anything but he does something.

Mahesh will be attacked by a gang. Mahesh escapes from them when they tried to kill him. Later Mahesh will follow the vilan and kills him. This video will be shot in cam by TV reporter Shruti, who is the heroine of the film. Heroine Shruti is a TV channel reporter. But Shruti will not see anyone except Mahesh in the video when played again. This is the first shock Sukumar gives his audience.

After that incident Mahesh could not concentrate on music and every one looks at him like a lost man. Mahesh will move to Goa. Then heroine starts being back of the hero. Another gang follows him in Goa also and attacks him in an attempt to kill. The murder attempt fails and Mahesh will escape from the threat. This time also Mahesh will kill the Vilan. This is the second time Sukumar gives again a twist to audience. It would be excited to watch the suspense twist on the screen than to know it here. Audience have to watch it on the screen and enjoy the thrill.

Performances

Mahesh Babu looks shrunk and he seems to have worked out a lot but not one scene was able to show those sleek muscles. Not much was there for him to perform too as it was serious character.

Kriti Sanon is drop dead beautiful. She has an extremely camera friendly face and added to that, her height and glowing skin give that glam appeal. She looks sexy with good performance quotient and has every potential to become a top league queen here.

Gautham Krishna looked cute and confident in front of the camera. Nasser was brief but did his part well. Kelly Dorjee was usual. Posani was okay. Pradeep Rawat was hardly there. Sayaji Shinde was not that great. Sophie’s sex appeal and oomph factor was not used properly.

Highlights
  • Mahesh Babu
  • Cinematography
  • Background score
Drawbacks
  • Confusing storyline
  • Complicated screenplay
  • Lag in scenes
  • Weak songs
  • Poor gripping quotient
  • Lack of enough peaks
Analysis

What happens when you are in full mood to have Dosa and then you get served a Subway sandwich? It is not to say Subway stuff is not good but the mood and taste goes bitter. The same experience happens when you watch this film.

Ideally, for any star hero film there are certain elements of expectation and requirement the audience seeks before entering the theatres. And if it is someone like Mahesh Babu then such requirements are more.

Given the time, money that has gone into the making and the hype that has been created there was enough happening in the audience minds when they waited for the film to take off. But after few minutes of the start, the mind goes blank and is basically trying to figure out what or why is it necessary to strain the brain so much.
Well, Sukumar has not left his signature style and worked a lot on the psychological aspect. In fact, the entire story revolves around the protagonist and his internal conflict, the action sequences and romance were just accessories which brought some energy into the whole plot.

Still, the lag factor tends to test the patience of the viewer to a large extent. The film takes off with some promise but as it progresses the brain game and psychological stuff from Sukumar begins to show and makes the audience feel over taxing their brains.
The interval bang was good no doubt and many expected the second half to make up for it. However, the second half also proceeds at its own pace.
Even the songs were not complete and it was evident that they were cut to reduce the run time of the film.

A thriller is meant to keep the viewer on the edge of seat but by the time the film reaches the closing stages, some of them are either slipping from the seats or sleeping by resting back.

Overall, the rating given is more to do with the technical aspects and the making but in terms of content this is not a product expected from Sukumar.

The movie has rated an average of 2.75 out of 5. Continue to read film critics' verdict on 1: Nenokkadine.

 Oneindia - Rating: 3

Overall, 1: Nenokkadine is a wonderful psychological thriller, which will appeal to a particular section of audience. The movie has Mahesh Babu's excellent performance, Sukumar brilliant direction, and amazing technical stuff. It is a paisa vasool entertainer that will remain as a classic and landmark film in the career of Mahesh Babu and Sukumar. Don't miss to watch the movie this weekend.

Idlebrain - Jeevi Rating: 3.25

When three big names - Mahesh Babu, Sukumar and 14 Reels are involved in making such a high-budgeted film, there are bound to be a lot of expectations. 1 Nenokkadine is not a commercial potboiler. Film lovers who have exposure to Hollywood films and world cinema will appreciate this movie. 1 Nenokkadine is a film that makes Mahesh, Sukumar, producers and entire unit proud.

Indiaglitz - Rating: 2.5

Although a gripping storyline (given that it is a mix of psychological thriller elements and Hollywoodish plot), Sukumar's narration falls short of expectations. The length adds to our woes, so much so one feels like one's patience is being tested. Gulte - Rating: 2.75 Mahesh Babu's brilliant performance is the only saving grace for this film. He has put in heart and soul in to the character and gave everything to it. But director Sukumar got it completely wrong and 1 ends up as an experiment that went horribly wrong.

Tupaki - 2.25

Too much of technical brilliance doesn't add much to success if it is not supported by stunning story. Though the thought behind making ‘1' is interesting, Sukumar's dull finish in the second hour and with climax is a letdown. No doubt, ‘1' failed to pass many subjects, though he is a brilliant student. B & Centres find it tough to understand this ‘intelligent' guy. We have to see how this impacts trade.

123Telugu - Review

For all the hype surrounding the movie, 1 - Nenokkadine ends up as a disappointment. Except for Mahesh Babu's outstanding performance in the film, there is nothing in the film to entice or entertain movie lovers. The needlessly complex plot and excessive run time make things worse. Because of Mahesh Babu's stardom and the Sankranthi season, the film may pull in good revenues in week 1.

Reason For Uday Kiran’s Suicide?

The reason are not much clear but according to the reports it can be family disputes. But till now nothing has been confirmed. Investigation has started considering every corner of his life. Another reason can be his detoriating career as his movies were not doing well in the box office. He had a half of dozen flop movies in his career but this reason should not be the reason of suicide. Gambling can be one of the reasons. Mounting Debts due to gambling might have attributed to suicide. Time will tell us truth behind the suicide.

Banjara Hills Police has filed Uday Kiran’s case as ‘suspicious death’. Satyanarayana, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Banjara Hills, said “Not murder, but we have filed the case as suspicious death. We will investigate thoroughly from every aspect and will check whether his death was happened by hanging with postmortem report”.

He also added that doctors confirmed that his was dead at 1:16 am on monday morning. Initial investigations suggest that he was in financial crisis and was not involved in work since last one year, which led him into huge depression. Well no note was found but his last message was “love you” to his wife.
